Record number of scholarships awarded
Foundation sends off 325 young Bahamians to study abroad

The Lyford Cay Foundation and The Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation have awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships to Bahamian students this year.
Many of the 325 recipients were treated to a luncheon send-off at the British Colonial Hilton in August. Foundation Chairman Harry C. Moore shared some of his favorite advice:
“Above all, heed these words of wisdom that Sir John Templeton taught me and I have lived by ever since: ‘The best thing to do in life is to teach othersthe joy of giving.’”

Dr. Ian Strachan, playwright/lecturer/poet, told students they have earned the responsibility to return home and tackle a myriad of problems. Dr. Strachan earned a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. with Foundation financial assistance and support.
Special Scholastic Assistance Search Coordinator Monique Hinsey organized the luncheon and addressed immediate concerns of students leaving home for the first time. Taylor University junior Alexandria Gatis had words of wisdom from her first three years of study abroad.

Lyford Cay alumni share lessons in life

Kevin Burrows, a chartered financial analyst (pictured), educated at Yale and Cambridge, was one of several Lyford Cay Foundation alumni who addressed a day-long workshop presented by the Lyford Cay Scholars Association at The College of The Bahamas.

Nearly 100 young Bahamians received solid tips on how to stay on the course for success.
Other scholars who participated included: Keith Bell, a veteran police officer who is now Acting Inspector in the Attorney-General’s office; Stacey Stubbs, National Teacher of the Year 2000-2001; and Dr. Sheena Antonio, an internist who graduated from St. George’s Medical School in Grenada after earning her Bachelor’s degree from Taylor University.
