Since their genesis, the Foundations have evolved into the largest non-governmental providers of educational and charitable financial assistance in The Bahamas, awarding funds well in excess of a million dollars each year in scholarships alone. Its contribution to the field of education is unparalleled in this part of the world.
Lyford Cay Foundation, Inc. and The Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation offer more than 300 partial scholarships each year to Bahamian students pursuing tertiary education in approved colleges, universities, technical or vocational schools in the U.S., Canada, the Caribbean and Europe.
Funding is derived from established endowments and the Foundations receive substantial tax deductible gifts from individuals, companies, private and family foundations and other charities. These are augmented by donations from the Bahamian business community, individuals and other interest groups. The Foundations make every effort to endow their scholarship programs to ensure the perpetuity of these awards
Scholarships are awarded NOT to the student but to the college or university of choice on the understanding that beneficiaries will return to The Bahamas to impart the skills and knowledge gained in their education, experience and exposure abroad for the enrichment of The Bahamas. Each year new awardees are added to replace graduating students, keeping the total of scholars at a constant level.

The competition for Scholarships is intense and candidates are required to go through a rigorous application procedure and satisfy established criteria for selection. Independent, non-partisan Screening Committees comprising prominent citizens representing education, government and the private sector, are responsible for making the final selections.

  ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS

* Launched in 1982, these Scholarships are merit-based though other important considerations such as quality of college, field of study, personal character and financial need are taken into account by the Screening Committees.

* Scholarships are offered at undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate levels, and are renewable through to graduation provided that a required standard of performance (cumulative G.P.A.) is maintained. Progress is monitored carefully through the regular submission of official transcripts from the colleges concerned.

  TECHNICAL TRAINING SCHOLARSHIPS

* Introduced in 1995, these awards are directed primarily at Bahamians who seek to train or upgrade skills in areas where there is a shortage of well qualified Bahamians in the work force. Academic proficiency is essential, however.

* Financial need among the applicants in this program is a particularly important consideration for the Screening Committee as well as the reputation of school and personal qualities of commitment and interest.

The Foundations have made scholarship awards totaling over $7 million to over 800 Bahamian students studying at the Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctorate, Technical & Vocational levels in Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. Since 1997, the Foundations have made scholarship awards to Bahamian students attending The College of The Bahamas totaling over $575,000.
