2001: Recapping a year of achievements
Scholars contribute to community in countless ways

More than one thousand Bahamian women and men have benefited from Lyford Cay Foundation scholarships over the years and a number of them have found opportunities to give back to the community.
This past year scholars have given in a variety of ways from donating time and money to needy seniors to inspiring high school students and encouraging present scholars.

Community Service in Action
The Lyford Cay Scholars selected Unity House (a home for elderly citizens) as their community service project for 2001. They began the project last March by presenting gifts of grocery items and much-needed supplies to residents. The scholars paid for the gifts with donations and funds from the Scholars’ Association account.

The Gifts and Grants Committee of the Lyford Cay Foundation Inc., generously made a grant towards the expenses of plumbing work and painting at Unity House. The scholars dedicated two Saturdays – April 28 and June 23 – to paint and assist in cleaning the grounds of Unity House. Laura Knowles-Stuart and Kevin Sweeting spearheaded the event.
On December 8, scholars presented the seniors with linen items, which were greatly needed.

The year at Unity House allowed scholars to make a valuable contribution to an organization that has given to many. It was also a genuine opportunity to interact with the elderly and with each other.
A special thank you to all who contributed to making this project a huge success. See story page 3.
