The Foundations have well-established histories in helping raise the level and standard of philanthropy in the community. The Lyford Cay Foundation inc. was founded in 1969 and The Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation in 1977. Originally organized by members of the Lyford Cay Club, the Foundations serve as "vehicles for giving" to The Bahamas and provide a way for people who care enough about The Bahamas to put their money to work for the improvement and betterment of all.

The Foundations provide a unique opportunity for citizens from all walks of life and countries to create and build a lasting source of benefit to The Bahamas. As a repository for gifts, the Foundations help people whose goodwill is toward any worthy charity in The Bahamas and assist donors by making grants to meet the most urgent needs of the community at the time.

The Foundations believe that one of their biggest contributions to The Bahamas is in the area of Education and have developed several scholarship programs for Bahamian students studying at Colleges and Universities in the United States, Canada, England, the Caribbean and The Bahamas at the Undergraduate, Graduate, Doctorate, Associate, Technical and Vocational levels.

To ensure perpetuity, the Foundations seek to endow their programs whenever possible. This base of assets from which the earnings are used in conjunction with annual unrestricted gifts enable the Foundations to make discretionary grants for the improvement of the community and support their very extensive scholarship programs. Administration endowments help support operations and the cost of careful management.

The Board of Directors of both Foundations are composed of a diversified group of responsible individuals who serve without compensation and are interested, involved and well versed in the Bahamian community.

Contributions of all sizes represent the Community's diversity and reputation as a caring, sharing, giving society. The Foundations act as good stewards for donated funds, invest and manage those funds wisely, and distributes them in a timely and equitable fashion according to the needs of The Bahamas.
